Japanese Knotweed Removal in South County, RI
Licensed treatment for one of the most aggressive invasive plants in Rhode Island.
In a Category of Its Own
Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica) is in a category of its own. It is one of the most aggressive invasive plants in the world. Its root system can reach 10 feet deep and spread 20 feet laterally from the visible plant. It pushes through asphalt, cracks foundation walls, compromises drainage systems, and destroys retaining structures. It has been documented reducing property values in affected areas of the UK, and Rhode Island is no exception to the damage it causes.
If you have knotweed on your property, the time to act is now. Every year you wait, the root system grows larger and the treatment timeline extends.
Why Cutting and Digging Don't Work
Knotweed root fragments as small as a half-inch can establish a new plant. Excavating knotweed without total root removal - which is practically impossible on an established stand - spreads the problem. Mowing stimulates the plant to send up more shoots from the root system. The only effective treatment is a multi-season licensed herbicide program targeting the root crown and rhizome network.
Treatment Program
We use licensed systemic herbicide applications timed to the plant's growth cycle. The most effective treatment windows are late spring when new canes reach 3 to 7 feet in height, and late summer to early fall when the plant is storing energy in its roots. Multiple treatments per season, across two or three growing seasons, are required for full control of an established stand.
We document the stand location and size at the start of the program and track reduction progress season by season. We will give you a realistic timeline and a written treatment plan.
South County Properties Most at Risk
Knotweed is particularly common along stream corridors, roadsides, disturbed areas, and properties that were previously developed or filled. If you have a stream on or near your property, or if a neighboring property has knotweed, your lot is at risk.
